For university and college graduates

If you have a university degree or a College of the North Atlantic diploma, you might want to consider taking our one-year journalism program.

Our post-diploma program focuses on core journalism skills in reporting, writing, TV, radio, online, ethics, law and layout. These practical skills in combination with the experience and knowledge you acquired in your first degree or diploma can give you more career options. Many of the skills we teach are useful in other fields such as communications and marketing as well as in journalism.

Our beat reporting course gives students an opportunity to specialize in a topic. For example, a business student could specialize in business journalism; a textiles student could specialize in fashion or lifestyles journalism; a music industry and performance or recording arts student could specialize in music or entertainment journalism.

The one-year journalism program could be a natural fit for other students as well. Graphic design and film & video students have been trained in fields that are already closely related to journalism and could thrive in our program. Some community studies students might be interested since they tend to possess a social conscience and an awareness of what makes communities tick – qualities that are highly valued among reporters.

Like all applied arts programs, ours is a very hands-on program. Our students produce their own news website, current affairs magazine, radio show and TV projects. The program also includes a four-week work placement with a professional news organization.
